Adapting through Life

Improvising

Our lives are full of challenges that require us to adapt constantly. Luckily we humans are fantastic at this, as are all living things, or we wouldn’t be here enjoying this wonderful planet!

We are brilliant at adapting in life, thinking on our feet and improvising. Even if you are shaking your head at this and saying ‘not me, I can’t improvise!’ You can. And you do daily! Just look at the conversations we have with each other, it’s all improvised, thinking on our feet. Sure sometimes we think of a brilliantly witty comeback just that bit too late, but in general we are super at adapting our knowledge and skills!

Jumping the hurdles

Sometimes though, we can forget to embrace these challenges.  We can get overwhelmed and see only the hurdles, not the solutions.

“Oh, no. I’m lost! Where’s the line? …..What do I do? What do I do?”….. “Now, stay calm. We are going around the leaf.”

So let’s practice not hitting the panic button when things don’t go to plan the way we had expected. Look instead for the piece that fits the puzzle. Not forgetting that if the piece is missing we may well have to create the piece from scratch, from string/ tape/ whatever bits and bobs we have to hand… But it will work if we make it work!

My Puzzle

I am excitedly working on my first dance film project and came across a definite hurdle last week. The music I had chosen, and had gotten ALL my inspiration for the choreography and concept had to be changed due to copyright details. Obviously this was a disappointment, and I did my best to find the missing puzzle piece.

So I delegated the creative task to a wonderful composer and the music is now being designed specifically for the piece. I have no doubt this hurdle has been well and truly overcome. And I can’t wait to make the film this Spring and share it with you!

What’s your hurdle?

And how do you deal with the jump? I’d love to hear your ideas on how to deal with challenges.
