Everyone doubts. And this is a good thing to remember. Even the Greats who we place on giant pedestals. They are still humans, regular people who do great things. They are not always Great and Strong and Confident.
Rambert the Great
I am reading about Marie Rambert who was a pioneer of ballet and contemporary dance in the 20th Century. I was so surprised to read a section in her book where she very openly declared that, after comparing herself to someone, she felt ‘very small and ignorant and useless’. Then with her husband’s support, she carried on regardless, and went on to form a world-leading Dance Company and School – where I was lucky enough to train and gain a 1st Class Degree.
Despite my personal achievements, I often have moments of doubt. Doubt is crippling. It’s heavy weight leaves us stuck in one spot if we let it. But it happens to the best of us.
What is important is how we deal with doubt. Here are some things we can do to help ourselves.
People & Positivity
Surround yourself with supportive people to help keep you strong. Family, friends, acquaintances on the same mission as you, anyone who supports your goals and visions.
Write it out
Write down what you have achieved and what that says about you. For example, I set up my own adult ballet class, that shows bravery and courage, ambition, leadership etc. These are important things for me personally to remember and it helps to take note of this for yourself. Do this exercise regularly, keep on adding to the list. It will get very long!
Get on with tasks anyway
You don’t have to get in a boxing ring to tackle your doubt, just leave it alone, get a cup of tea and get on with your things. It will soon leave when it sees it’s not getting your attention!
How do you get rid of doubt? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let me know below….
